My partner is going to be with me and is my main support. Do I need a Doula? Very often a Doula is helpful not only for the mother but also for the partner, especially if this is your first birth. In fact, partners may feel they can be more helpful with a Doula there to give them suggestions on how to offer support. Additionally, anxiety and fear can lead to tensing your body and holding your breath, which can make contractions more painful and sometimes even stall labor. Having the calming presence of a Doula by your side during your labor and delivery can help both of you to feel less anxious, which can allow you to better cope with the surges and allow your body to more efficiently bring your baby down and out!
What's the difference between a Midwife and a Doula? A Midwife is a medical provider and is responsible for ensuring a medically safe and healthy delivery for mama and baby. A Doula, on the other hand, is not a medical professional and cannot provide medical advice and/or medical exams. Instead, your Doula stays by your side 24-7 and uses her knowledge of birth physiology to offer informational, emotional, and spiritual support. She can suggest positional changes and pain management techniques that can help you better cope with your surges so that you feel confident and empowered during your labor and delivery.
Do I have to be Catholic to hire a Catholic Doula? While my faith and my love for Jesus ground me and give me strength, I strive to never to impose birth preferences or spiritual beliefs on my clients. Of course, if you ask, I will happily pray with you and for you. But above all, I'm there to support you and help you achieve the birth of your dreams.
What if I can't afford to hire you? Please do not let money prevent you from receiving the support of a Doula. Because I believe so strongly in supporting mothers during this sacred time, I am happy to discuss other avenues to ease the financial burden. Please ask me about it in your free consultation.
